The Outcome of Obedience

DAY 2 OF 5

Day Two: The Cost and Reward of Obedience

What is the cost of obedience?

Obedience often comes with a cost, but it also brings immense rewards. When God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, it signified a profound shift in his mission and identity. Abram, which means “exalted father,” was transformed into Abraham, meaning “father of many nations.” This name change was not merely symbolic; it was a constant reminder of God's promise and Abraham’s divine mission.

In Genesis 22, God tested (to prove the validity or authenticity of) Abraham’s faith and commitment by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. This command was incredibly challenging, not only because Isaac was Abraham’s beloved son but also because he was the child through whom God had promised to fulfill His covenant. Abraham’s willingness to obey, even at great personal cost, demonstrates his deep trust in God’s promises. Despite the emotional and spiritual turmoil, Abraham acted in faith, believing that God could still fulfill His promise, even if Isaac were sacrificed.

What is the reward of obedience?

Abraham’s obedience brought immense blessings. When he demonstrated his willingness to obey, God provided a ram as a substitute for Isaac, sparing his son’s life. Moreover, God reaffirmed His covenant with Abraham, promising to bless him and multiply his descendants. This story highlights that while obedience may involve sacrifice, it ultimately leads to greater blessings and a deeper relationship with God. God’s commands may seem difficult, but our obedience paves the way for His greater blessings in our lives.

Pray this Prayer:

Gracious Father, please grant me the courage to obey You, even when it is difficult, and it is hard to understand what You are asking of me. Remind me of your promises and the rewards that come with faithful obedience. Help me to trust in your plans and walk in your ways, knowing that you always have my best interests at heart. Amen.

Your Practical Action Step:

Identify a challenging area where God is calling you to obey. Consider the potential sacrifices and the blessings that may follow. Take a step of faith today, trusting that God will honor your obedience and provide for you just as He did for Abraham.
