The Father's Character

“Our father in Heaven,
Hallowed be your name.”

In the first sentence of the Lord’s Prayer, we see Jesus praying about the character of God. We see this pattern of praying to God about His character throughout scripture. King David, the prophet Nehemiah, and the apostle Paul all reference God’s character often in their prayers.

As you pray today, pray about who God is. This not only glorifies God, but it also reminds you of who He is and what He’s done for you.

So what are some characteristics of God that you can pray about? Well, we can start with how Jesus prayed. The phrase “Our Father” addresses the fact that God is our Father who knows us intimately and loves us. The word “hallowed” means for something to be honored as holy. Jesus’ prayer addresses God’s name as holy, worthy of our reverance and awe.

As you follow Jesus’ example of praying about God’s character, there are so many elements of His character that you can address. To help you think of some, remember that God’s character is perfectly revealed in Jesus. Attributes of Jesus are all characteristics of God that you can pray and thank Him for.

Here are some of the characteristics of God that may help guide your prayers:

• He is the Creator.
• He’s loving.
• He’s kind.
• He’s just.
• He’s compassionate.
• He’s powerful
• He’s merciful

God is all these things and more. Our readings today will help remind you of God’s character as revealed in scripture. Make your prayers personal by thinking of a specific time in your life when you've experienced some of these attributes of God.

As we focus on God's character in our prayers, we're reminded of His greatness and love, which can bring us peace and strength as we face our daily challenges.
