Living Undivided: A Devotional for Racial Healing & Justice

DAY 3 OF 5

Lead with Mercy

As we learn to live undivided, we are challenged to embrace the holy power of mercy, steered by our faith and the unconditional love of God. Nehemiah’s response to the injustices he witnessed was not just an external restructuring but a profound internal reckoning that led to restorative actions. His leadership exemplifies how empathy and mercy can be forces for significant change, both within ourselves and in our circles.

As Nehemiah took decisive steps to address the injustices in Jerusalem, he demonstrated what it means to "love mercy" in action. This stage of our exploration demands a shift from inward reflection to outward action, contemplating how we can move from a state of conflicted feelings about racism to a convicted stance that drives us toward healing and action. Like Nehemiah, we are urged to consider our roles at different levels — internal, interpersonal, institutional, and structural — and how they contribute to racial healing.

Mercy demands that we recognize that our paths are intersected and that the struggle against injustice is not carried by the oppressed alone but is a shared responsibility. Mercy requires intentional engagement, challenging us to take closer note of our positions within systems of injustice. This realization compels us to act, to use our own stories and spheres of influence to advocate for equity and justice. This process of reckoning and restoration is grounded in Christ's love, reminding us that our identities in Jesus move us to act justly and love mercy.

Consider the spaces you occupy. How can they become more inclusive and reflective of the diversity that enriches our world? Think about the areas in your life where God is calling you to act with mercy and justice. Reflect on the steps you can take to contribute to healing the racial divides, inspired by the command in Micah 6:8. How does your identity in Christ inform your response to the challenges of racial injustice?

Solidarity emerges as the bridge between empathizing with racial divisions and participating in the work needed for reconciliation. We are reminded that true solidarity involves uncomfortable truth-telling and systemic change efforts. It's a commitment to standing alongside those who fight for justice, lending our voices, our focus, and our energy.

Today, let's align our actions with our convictions. The path to racial reconciliation is lengthy and intricate, yet every step forward is vital. Consistently move toward advocacy, not only in moments of heightened awareness but as a steadfast presence in the ongoing struggle for racial equality. How can you use your platforms, your talents, and your resources to contribute to a broader movement for change?

May we reflect the heart of God, working towards a world where every individual is recognized, valued, and embraced in their full humanity.

Prayer

God, when I am wronged today, give me the ability to love mercy more than vengeance. Show how I can use my time, my talents, and my treasure to offer mercy to those in need.
