The Truth Will Set You FreeSample
The Truth Confronts Culture
Yesterday we learned that truth isn’t just a set of facts—it’s a person, Jesus Christ. When we get to know His way of life, we learn how to become the best, truest version of ourselves.
Of course, letting Jesus change you is a process, and it isn’t always easy.
Today, you’ll read a passage written by Paul, an early follower of Jesus. He tells us some of what it looks like practically to find freedom through living and loving like Jesus.
His first challenge is to resist the pull of culture. Remember that challenge; we’ll come back to it later.
Next Paul encourages Jesus followers not to think too highly of themselves and to remember that every person has unique, God-given skills and abilities. Paul then challenges believers to be examples of peace, hospitality, generosity, and forgiveness.
Sounds simple, right? Maybe even a little too simple. Let’s be honest—we all know that generously serving others is good. So what makes this truth so profound? And how will it set us free?
Let’s think about what we’ve heard from culture, friends, and family about what it means to live a full, meaningful life. You’ve probably gotten some great advice that aligns with God’s truth. But all too often, we end up believing some harmful lies as well.
Maybe you’ve heard that the key to happiness is working nonstop to get the promotion or that true fulfillment comes through a romantic relationship. And someone’s likely told you that the key to lasting peace is a steady income and a full bank account.
We all want happiness, fulfillment, and peace, but can you see how the Bible and culture have differing views on how to achieve these goals?
Jesus didn’t have a romantic relationship, wasn’t concerned with His job title, and certainly didn’t have tons of cash, yet the Bible insists that He lived the perfect human life.
So is it possible that we’re pursuing the wrong things? Sometimes even well-meaning advice is a distraction that keeps us trapped in sin. We might be missing out on the life God’s calling us to lead.
Culture isn’t necessarily good or evil. It’s simply a mirror of humanity’s collective character. Christians can celebrate and embrace certain aspects of culture, but we can’t fully conform to culture and let it define truth. Why? Culture’s version of truth often keeps us trapped in comparison, pride, despair, and self-focus—but the way of Jesus can set us free.
Pray: Dear God, help me focus on You and Your truth. I don’t want to be distracted by cultural pressure that leads me to cycles of sin. Please keep leading me toward full devotion to Your way of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Challenge: Today there’s only one passage of Scripture. Read it slowly, and then reread it even more slowly. As you do, ask God to show you a verse or two that might feel a little uncomfortable. Then, ask Him to help you embrace His truth and find greater freedom in it.
