Elements of Worship

DAY 5 OF 10

freedom <-----> fear

Responsive worshipper, when we enter new life in Jesus through His crucifixion and resurrection, we receive as part of our birthright the same relationship Jesus has with His Father. There is no more separation between the Father and His people. We are set extravagantly free in a way that the most experienced worshipper among us has never fully tasted. Yet the invitation lays open before us.

But Biblical testimonies present a tension. In the Scriptures, God’s pure glory, whether an interaction with God Himself or a heavenly being fresh from His presence, often invoke shock and terror. Some fall as though dead. This is true in both the Old and New Testaments—even after the cross. The fear of the Lord is a Kingdom requirement, and in the final act of worship at the end of the age, every knee will bow. God unveiled is terrible in beauty.

Again, this exciting tension. When God comes to us as a benevolent Father, turning our mourning to dancing, we are set free like calves from a stall (Mal. 4:2–3). It would be travesty to withhold spontaneous worship, a waste of grace bestowed at so great a cost. Yet, equally, there are moments in the Holy of Holies of worship when speaking or even moving would be desecration. As Holy Spirit guides, there is a time and place for both—worship in freedom and holy awe.

An Invitation

With Holy Spirit as Guide and Friend prepare to risk in worship:

In a private place and time, confidently approach the throne of God in your heart. Be assured, child of God, Jesus has already been to this place ahead of you and provided His blood covering for your freedom. With childlike abandon try one spontaneous act of worship that is new to you. No one is watching but the Lord—and you can be assured of His smile.

Perhaps in another time and setting, spend some time meditating on the magnitude of God’s beauty, power, and holiness. If you would like a place to start, perhaps begin with the Rev. 1 passage included in this day’s Bible plan. Ask Holy Spirit to introduce you to a greater degree of holy awe. Tremble at His Word. If so led, kneel or prostrate yourself before Him who alone is your Creator and Sustainer.

Whether worshipping in freedom or profound awe, let love be our motivation.
