The Roles of the Holy Spirit: A Study for Teens

DAY 5 OF 5

Spirit of Truth

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:12–16; John 16:13

I grew up hearing the gospel message for 18 years of my life. And for all those years, I didn’t respond to that message. But, when I was 18, I vividly remember a moment when I heard a gospel presentation, and it brought me to tears, impacted my heart, and became real to my mind. What happened in that moment that had not yet happened to me all those years prior? I believe that in that moment, the Lord softened my heart, and the Spirit of God led me to accept the truth that was from Him.

1 Corinthians 2:12 (NIV) says we’ve received the Spirit of God “so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” And for anyone who doesn’t have the Spirit, well, they can’t accept the things of God. In fact, the Scriptures say they consider the truth of God to be foolish. I wholeheartedly believe I experienced this in a super-tangible way. For a massive part of my life, I heard the truth of God but couldn’t receive it or make sense of it because I was living for the flesh and pursuing worldly lies. But, when God softened my heart, and I began to follow Jesus, His Spirit helped me to understand the beautiful reality of all that’s true. And what once sounded like foolishness became the truth I treasured the most.

The incredible thing is that this isn’t just a one-time thing. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just come once to help us understand the gospel, lead us to salvation, and then leave us to figure out this whole following Jesus thing on our own. No! What the Holy Spirit did the day He revealed the truth of the gospel to me—and what He continues to do every day since for me and every follower of Jesus—is to reveal the depths of the gospel and the reality of Jesus.

If you’re in Jesus today, the Spirit of God is inside you, and His role is to remind you of what is true. So, lean in and listen, ask Him to guide you in all that’s true, and reveal the heart of the Father to you.

Pray

Thank You, Father, for giving me the Spirit to teach me about You and what’s on Your heart and mind. Help me to hear the voice of the Spirit of Truth and to be obedient to His prompting. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
