Living Differently in this World
Jesus prays for two main things for His followers. He prays that as they are sent out into the world to share His truth, they would not adopt the world’s perspective or let it dictate their values. He knows much of the world will reject this truth and those who bring it. Rather than requesting His followers be taken out of the world and spared rejection, Jesus prays they would be protected from the enemy as they share this truth with the world.
Not being in the world doesn’t mean hiding away from it. Jesus is talking about position and identity. Being "in the world" means living here and dealing with everyday life. But being "not of the world" means not letting the world's values or ways of thinking shape who you are.
What truth do you listen to? Maybe as you’ve gone through these devotionals, what you’ve read has started feeling like truth in your heart. The call for those who follow Jesus is to love the people of the world while living differently in this world.
In the next lesson, you’ll look at how you are called not to just hear what Jesus has to say, but it must lead to action in your life.
Prayer
“God, help me see that real truth comes from You. Your Word is to shape my understanding of right and wrong. Help me live a life that is different than the world. Thank You that even when the world rejects me, You protect me. Amen.”
