Classic Man vs. Christ-Like Man
Yesterday, we saw how manliness means endurance. Scripture leaves no doubt that this icon of classic masculinity is largely accurate. Literal or metaphorical scars, sweat, and struggle are part of being a man until Jesus comes.
Some aspects of “classic masculinity” are damaging, dangerous, and contrary to what Scripture teaches. We need not defend these—Jesus certainly won’t.
“Classic Man” dominates and subordinates. Children are afraid of this father and employees of this boss. He leads and accomplishes through fear and coercion. It is his way or the highway.
On the contrary, “Christ-Like Man” submits to others (Ephesians 5:21). He’s good at doing what God wants rather than forcing others to do what he wants. He is gentle but not weak. His temper has been tempered into patience. He can and does speak the truth, but he does not use the truth to terrify or intimidate. He can be comfortable in the kitchen and wears out the knees of his jeans as he plays with the kids. His leadership looks like service (Mark 10:35-45).
Classic Man is steeped in a sexuality of getting and taking. He looks to lust (Matthew 5:27-30) and always finds his eyes and heart objectifying women.
Christ-Like Man loves more than lusts. He sees women made in God’s image, whereas others see objects for their pleasure. He fights the battles of mind, word, and habit.
Classic Man is too proud to ask for directions and help. He’s independent to a fault. He may even believe himself to be self-made. He thinks anyone willing to work as hard as he did would be where he is.
Christ-Like Man knows that life is a gift and our greatest attainments are fuelled by grace (Deuteronomy 8:17-18) and the help of others. He has a long track record of asking for help as well as forgiveness.
Every man I’ve met has been torn between these two pathways.
My prayer is that we submit to Christ’s work to make us “Christ-Like Men” and follow Christ’s narrow way.
“The Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction” (Psalm 1:6).
Prayer: Father, help me to grow up to be like You. Give me the strength to flee temptation and choose the way of Christ today. Please show me where I’m a Classic Man instead of a Christ-Like Man…(pause and listen for a minute or two, and respond accordingly). Amen.
Reflection: Where are you like Classic Man? Where are you like Christ-Like Man? Is Christ speaking to you about any of these areas today?
