DAY 16 OF 28

WEEK 3, DAY 2—WHAT IS WORSHIP?

When you hear the word “worship,” you might have some different thoughts about what it means! Worship, in the dictionary, simply means to “show reverence and adoration for a deity (God).” So, worshiping God is simply showing our love for him—in any way possible. Worship most often, in church, takes the format of singing songs, but worship can be anything that gives God glory. You can show love to God in the way you study, in the way you do chores, and in the way you sing at church—you can worship in anything.

Worship is one of the most humbling and intimate things we can do. Worship is an opportunity for us to be in the presence of God and experience him. Worship is unique for each person and is much more about our hearts than what we do. For different people, and at different times of our lives, it may look like dancing and shouting, kneeling, closing your eyes, lifting your hands, crying, or simply being quiet and reflective in the presence of God. The goal of worship is simply to give glory and honor to God, and also to experience his presence!

Why do we lift our hands when we worship? Why do we jump and go crazy when we praise? The truth is, there’s nothing magical about anything physical we do in worship because worship is about our hearts. But, doing something physical is powerful because it is an expression of what’s taking place in your heart. Just the same as you get hyped up at a sports game or go crazy at a concert, being physically and verbally expressive in your worship, is an expression of what’s happening on the inside!
