The Life of Davidਨਮੂਨਾ

Day 28: 2 Sam. 23-24 x Lorisa Miller, Founder + Senior Leader of UPPERROOM
"Motives Matter"
In 2 Samuel 24, David commands his men to take a census of the people. Although 2 Samuel 24 indicates that the Lord incited David to do this, the same account in 1 Chronicles 21 tells us that Satan incited David to take a census. Joab knew this was grievous to God, saying, "Why does the king desire this thing?"
As we have seen and studied throughout these books, we know God looks at the heart, our motives. Is counting people a bad thing? No. But to take a sense of pride in the outcome is. Our "why" matters before the Lord, and we must yield to Him to purify our motives, by inviting Him to search our hearts and ask us, "Why?”
Why say that? Why wear that? Why post that? Why check your number of views or likes? Sometimes, He speaks through another's voice, but it is Him. Our "why" matters. What He uncovers, He is willing to cleanse if we humble ourselves and allow Him to wash us.
Prayer: Lord, I welcome the searchlight of Your Holy Spirit to scan my heart and motives and cleanse me from any unrighteousness. Thank You for stripping me of all sense of identity outside of belonging to You. Establish my identity and security as Your beloved child and pure bride. There is nothing I long for more!
Readers–we are so thankful you joined us on this journey through the life of David and 1 and 2 Samuel. Keep reading this book—it is alive, and it is all about Him!

About this Plan

“The Life of David” is an in-depth study through 1-2 Samuel. Together, we will look at how David stewarded his heart through the complexities and challenges he faced. This month-long study will bring biblical context to why we do what we do as a community: ministering to the Lord and establishing a resting place for Him.
