Overcoming: Devotions From Time of Grace

DAY 16 OF 35

The Brokenness of Disability Modern medicine, home health care, and skilled care facilities are all wonderful things for people with major health problems. But one side effect is to make these people more invisible to the general public. Have you ever spent an afternoon in a nursing home? How many people do you know with Down syndrome? Advocates for the disabled hate that term and prefer "differently abled." The Americans with Disability Act put the clout of the state behind the movement to make public buildings accessible. Excellent! We Christians should lead the pack in helping people define themselves not by what they can't do, but by what they can. Our Lord Jesus once explained why God had allowed a man to experience blindness for many years: "So that the work of God might be displayed in his life" (John 9:3). Physical brokenness can work for God's loving plans if it makes us hungry for heaven, kind and helpful to those weaker than we are, and if it rebukes our chronic selfishness and materialism. Is it possible that God lets you live with physical brokenness so that his work might be revealed in your life?
