Jesus is the ultimate Passover lamb

“For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)

The feast of Passover was instituted by God. The Israelites were to celebrate it every year to remember how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt. (For more context, you can read the book of Exodus chapters 1-3 and 12.)

The very first time this feast was celebrated, was the night that the Israelites left Egypt. That night, God killed every firstborn son of the Egyptians. But the Israelites had been told to kill a lamb and put its blood as a sign on their houses. “When I see the blood,” God told them, “I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:12-13)

The Passover lambs that were killed every year, pointed forward to Jesus Christ. He is called “the Lamb of God” (see John 1:29). Just as the Passover feast was about God delivering the people from slavery in Egypt, so Jesus’ death is about God delivering people from slavery to sin. Just as the blood of the Passover lamb saved the people from destruction, so Jesus’ blood saves believers from God’s wrath.

It was not by coincidence that Jesus Christ died during the feast of Passover. He is the ultimate Passover Lamb!
