The Heavenly Host: Devotions From Time Of Grace MinistrySample
Mighty spirits
Only a few fortunate human beings in history have ever been allowed to see the angels. God made them in the form of spirits, and thus they are invisible to us. Though they have appeared to people in human form, they do not have flesh and blood as we do. And yet they are not just a faceless army of drones and clones. They have names, identities, individual willpower, unique gifts and missions.
And immense strength. God invests them with some of his almighty power when it pleases him to use them as instruments of his will. The apostle John was allowed to see a vision of them at work, and though the vision is in part a metaphor, it is based on reality: “Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: ‘With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again’” (Revelation 18:21).
God’s angels are mighty spirits. It is a great comfort for anxious believers to know that they are on our side. Satan and his demons seem so strong and ubiquitous that we fear we will be overwhelmed. There is so much evil, so much violence, so much terror pouring from the pits of hell! But God’s holy angels are stronger still. The saints will be preserved, the church will prevail, and the Grand Reunion will take place on schedule.
