Discovery Pathway Classes - Baptism and Spirit-Filled Living

DAY 4 OF 30

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Matthew 3:16-17

As you step into the waters of baptism, you are following in the footsteps of Jesus. Did you know that? Jesus himself once stood in front of a crowd of people and was baptized. Take a moment to imagine the scene.

Jesus walked out into the river with his friends and many others standing on the shore. Jesus felt the cool water wash over his face. He heard bubbles all around him in a moment of peace. Did Jesus have you in mind at that moment? He knew that others would follow him into the waters of baptism. When Jesus came out of the water, he wiped the water from his face. He saw the faces of those around him. He saw the joy on John’s face, on the faces of friends and family. Everyone felt joy!

Today, in Matthew 3, you will have a chance to read about his baptism. On the day that Jesus was baptized, God the Father also celebrated. The Father said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.” These were words that would strengthen the identity of Jesus. These were words that would equip him for the trials that were ahead. Right after his baptism, Jesus went into the wilderness for 40 days without eating or drinking. After those 40 days, he was tempted by the devil. However, the words of the Father were still ringing in his ears and strengthening Jesus as he went through some of his toughest days.

In Romans 8, we are told that God has adopted us as his children. As you are baptized, let it be a reminder that God is crazy about you! You are His beloved child. He is pleased with you. He is making you new! The God of the universe celebrates you! Let these truths begin to redevelop your identity to strengthen you during trials. Begin to see yourself as God sees you! Today, spend time enjoying the joy of your Heavenly Father.
