WHO IS MAMMON, THE ARCH-ENEMY OF OUR FINANCES?

In Matthew 6:24, Jesus mentions a force of darkness. In Hebrew, the word "riches" is “Mammon.” The Bible contains many verses of Jesus explaining the role of money (Mammon) in our lives and the danger that this dominating power is. Mammon is a high-ranking spiritual being. He is an agent of Satan whose job is to plague mankind in relation to money. He acts in two extremes - either he tempts us to have a spirit of stinginess, or he tempts us to have a spirit of wasteful extravagance. He tries to influence us towards unending savings or foolish spending.

Richard J. Foster, in his bestseller “Money, Sex, and Power” talks about this evil spirit saying, "Money is not something morally neutral, a resource to be used in good or bad ways, depending solely on our attitude towards it. Mammon is a power that seeks to dominate us. ... According to Jesus and all the authors of the New Testament, behind money, there is an active agent; it is a law in itself; and it is able to inspire devotion." Paul warns us that we should not ignore Satan's schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11). Learning how Mammon acts is one of the ways to prevent that, and that's exactly what we're talking about on this journey.

As the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte stated: "To win a battle is to know the enemy, the terrain, and your own forces. It is to know exactly the conditions you have to triumph before the enemy. To lose the battle is to lose one's life." You must be able to identify Mammon's attacks while they are happening and defeat him in the name of Jesus. I urge you to pray and fast while on this journey. Don't back down! Take new ground!
