Who Is God? Exploring the Attributes of GodSample
The Holiness of God
I have been speechless several times in my life. It had everything to do with the beauty and majesty of creation. I have seen breathtaking mountains covered in pristine snow. I have seen a serene night sky filled with countless stars. And my eyes often catch that one star that shines brighter and more radiant than the rest. I was amazed at the vastness of God’s creation. I feel the same way about the holiness of God.
When God called the prophet, Isaiah saw God on His throne, on high. (Isaiah 6). He saw God Almighty! No wonder Isaiah was shaking in his sandals! He was in the presence of God!
God’s nature is pure and good. His goodness is above all creation and every living creature. His greatness surpasses everyone and everything. “Who is like you among the gods, O Lord—glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor. performing great wonders?” Exodus 15:11 (NLT)
God’s splendor is unmatched. As His creation, we should worship and praise Him. His greatness should move us to awe and quiet reverence because of His splendor. We should tune our hearts to remember and constantly praise God for His awesomeness.
God is pure and good. He is unmarked by sin and evil. “And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else.” James 1:13 (NLT)
God does not tolerate sin. His holiness will not allow it. While He is longsuffering and patient for us to repent, sin never goes unpunished. To know what is pure and holy, we must measure against the holiness of God. He is our standard for all that is right and good. “But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” I Peter 1:15-16 (NLT)
God calls for us to be holy. We should pursue a life of righteousness that is pleasing to Him.
Reflect:
What comes to mind when you think about the holiness of God?
What area in your life do you need to pursue holiness?
