DAY 4 OF 4

A Towel Can Change Every Relationship

In college, I served in New Orleans at an extremely large housing development—just off St. Charles Avenue. Great crowds of people of all ages attended evangelical rallies our team held. Over the years, I tried to get people involved—everyone wanted to sign up to sing, give testimonies, and preach… but no one wanted to set up chairs. This was a formative season for me. It was here I learned true servanthood is much more than being seen—it’s about what you do when you’re not noticed.

We see a clear picture of consummate servant leadership in the life of Jesus in John 13. Just prior to the crucifixion, Jesus and the disciples gathered for the Last Supper. At the time, it was common for the lowest of servants to wash each person’s feet as they entered the home… but in John 13:4, Jesus rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet…

Wow! Jesus got up from the table on this momentous night, changed into his servant clothes, and grabbed a towel to wash their filthy feet. You see, Jesus was secure—He had nothing to prove. His focus wasn’t on having a title; instead, He picked up a towel. Jesus served.

Friend, God wants to use your life to do something great—and it starts with being secure in who God says you are, picking up the towel, and serving others.

As you engage with God’s Word, ask yourself the following questions:

● What is God saying to me?

● What does it mean to me?

● How can I apply what God is teaching me?

● How can I be specific in prayer today?

After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
