Promises: Always Present

Have you ever attempted to hide from God? I have. I think most of us have tried. We look for dark places where we rationalize that God can’t see our actions. We snuggle up in an emotional corner and focus on our feelings. We head for a mental open range where our thoughts can run free. But we can never hide from God! That’s one lesson God taught King David many times.

Psalm 139:1-6
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

In the opening verses of Psalm 139, David proclaims God’s omniscience. He knows everything there is to know about everything there is to know. Whether we are sitting still or on the move, whether we are far from home or in our living rooms, God is “familiar with all [our] ways.” Our words, thoughts, and actions never take him by surprise. We can’t escape the One who surrounds us on all sides!

How should we respond to God’s all-knowing nature? David concludes that the person of God is “too wonderful for me” and “too lofty for me to attain.” He knows us inside and out. He has our backs. He never lets us out of his sight. We will never be out of his mind. He carries his children all the way to eternity. We can only respond to such a Person in humble worship and thank him for his omniscient oversight.

Father, today is the day that I stop trying to hide from you. I stand open, bare, and vulnerable. Search me and show me my sin. Help me to repent. I worship you alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
