Holy Spirit Devotional

DAY 9 OF 14

HOLY SPIRIT COME

In Psalm 139, David teaches us that God is present every where at all times. He is omnipresent, meaning He transcends all space and time. Though He is omnipresent, it doesn’t mean that the Holy Spirit is actively present at all times. We see this in the Old Testament when the Holy Spirit comes upon strong people of faith to empower them to do mighty works in the name of the Lord. We also see this throughout the New Testament where the Holy Spirit comes upon people who hadn’t previously known about Him and baptizes them in the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:6). On the flip side, we also see times when the Holy Spirit manifests on those who had already received the Holy Spirit.

In Acts 4, Peter and John go before the Sanhedrin [Jewish council] to testify of Jesus’ resurrection and salvation. They are jailed, but then later released. As they go on and pray with the believers around them, verse 31 says, “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” These are believers who had just been filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost who were filled with the Holy Spirit again, as He manifested by shaking the room! He made the believers there more aware of His presence, which was followed by a sign and wonder (Acts 8:13)! The Holy Spirit has made His dwelling place in us (2 Tim 1:14), but He loves to make us more aware of His presence as we encounter Him and invite Him into the room.

This is why we pray the prayer, “Holy Spirit, Come!” We are asking the Holy Spirit to come and manifest His presence in the room, wherever we are. We are asking for the Holy Spirit to make us more aware of His presence and to come in power. We know that when He makes Himself known, He shakes rooms, comes in power, and manifests in mighty ways.

Pray: Holy Spirit, come. You can have the entire room. Do what You want to do! I surrender all control to You and say that I am a willing vessel. Come, Holy Spirit, and fill me! I love it when You come. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
