More than 2,500 years ago, the red carpet began as a symbol of honour to welcome a king home from war. Scarlet or bright red dye was the most expensive and most difficult to make of all the colours. Throughout history, it became a symbol of royalty and was used in palaces and castles. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the red carpet was used to welcome movie stars to film premiers and awards ceremonies.

Jesus is the King of kings, but no red carpet was rolled out for him. Do you remember the story of Palm Sunday? People laid their coats on the ground to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem. Jesus died on the cross and rose again. His blood was shed so we could be saved. Jesus makes the way so everyone can be saved and welcomed into God’s family, like royalty. The red carpet welcomes people to church.

Jesus has welcomed us into His Kingdom and asks us to welcome others. Kingdom people welcome others.
