Watch What We Say!

Since God has put much emphasis on the words of our mouths, I believe we need to make it a top priority. Some people seem to get by with making bad confessions without suffering the consequences. It can be a delayed harvest where repercussions come later down the road. Have you ever said something because you knew it was going to shock someone when you said it? People will, at times, say the wrong things just to get attention. I’ve seen kids say precisely the opposite of what their parents want them to say to get attention.

I knew a woman who would often say something she didn’t mean. She wasn’t serious, but when her husband would do something she didn’t like, she’d say, “I think we just need to get a divorce. We’re just not right for each other.” She was half-joking and didn’t mean it. She had no intention of getting a divorce. But the time came when her words bore fruit, resulting in a painful divorce.

If you say what the Word of God says long enough, you will eventually build faith to believe it, in spite of anything that you see, anything that you hear, or anything you feel. The Word will begin to manifest in your life. Romans 10: 9-10 is a spiritual law—a faith principle—and it works.

Believing is not a feeling, and neither is our faith a feeling. It’s just a decision. You don’t have to feel anything, but you do have to choose to believe simply because it’s the Word of God. When you decide to believe a promise from the Word of God, confess it until it becomes a conviction of the heart.

The Word of God works when you work it by speaking it in faith. Let’s look at a few more scriptures about the power and importance of our words and very good reasons to be careful of our words. Read the Scriptures in your favorite translation or multiple translations for a better understanding.

— In Matthew 12:36-37 The Word gives us a warning about every careless Word that is spoken. Have you ever thought about this? It is a sobering thought.

— Proverbs 13:3 is a powerful promise to those who will guard their mouth. We are told it preserves our life.

— 1 Peter 3:10 to the one who wants to enjoy life and see many happy days, this Scripture tells us it is a must that we keep our tongue from speaking evil and our lips from telling lies.

What if you realize you have sown some bad seeds, repeated words you didn’t mean, or wished you could take back? What’s next? Start by repenting and renouncing. Repent for words you have spoken that were potentially hurtful to your life or the lives of others. Renounce agreement with things you’ve said that doesn’t align with God’s Word of truth. This might be an ongoing assignment for a while as you are reminded of words you don’t want to see come to pass. Declare in faith what the Word of God says instead.

Example: By the stripes of Jesus, I am healed. The Holy Spirit leads and guides me into all truth. I delight in You, Lord, and in Your Word. I submit myself to Your Word, which judges the thoughts and purposes of my heart. I desire to please You rather than men. Forgive me for loving the approval and praise that comes from men. With every temptation, I choose the way of escape that You provide.

Father, I may not believe the power of my words as much as I need to believe it right now, but, Lord, I’m going to say it, and I’m going to pray it in my prayer closet until it becomes a true conviction. And when it does, I believe I will start seeing miracles and answered prayers. Father, I thank you for this simple teaching. And yet, Lord, as simple as it is, it was important enough to You that James wrote about the importance of how we use the words of our mouth. We’ve all been guilty, but, Lord, we repent. We want to come to a place where we see the words of our mouths as important as You see them. We want to do whatever it takes to develop a conviction in our hearts. God, you’ve given us such wonderful promises, and we choose, Lord, by an act of our will to walk in them. We thank You for access to many wonderful promises in Your Word when we seek them out and speak them in faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen
