3 Money Questions to Ask Before Getting MarriedSample
Day 1: What are your long-term financial goals?
In this plan we're excited to guide you through three important questions to consider before getting engaged or married. It's crucial to have these conversations early on in your relationship, especially if you're thinking of taking the next step. Why?
Well, did you know that arguing about money is the top early predictor of divorce?
A study published in the Journal of Family Relationships found that 94% of people in great marriages discuss their money dreams with their spouse. Despite this, many couples don't talk about money.
But don't worry, we're here to help! By having open and honest conversations about finances, you'll be on your way to a successful marriage.
Our first step (even before we get to the 3 questions) is to find out if your partner is open to talking about finances.
This will give you an idea of how they handle conflict and what future conversations might look like. Once you confirm that, let’s get to the first question.
Question 1: What are your long-term financial goals?
This is a great opportunity for your significant other to share their beliefs and feelings. It's important to listen and observe their habits to get a sense of the truth.
This question is important because it helps establish direction. For example, one of our first long-term financial goals was to become debt free. This goal was in alignment and helped us realize that we were a good match for each other.
On the other hand, if one of us wanted to live debt-free in a small town and a small house, and the other wanted luxury brands and to live in New York with no care towards our financial health, it would be important to know that. Right?
It may seem obvious, but it's surprising how many people rush into marriage without having these conversations.
That's why we're sharing this, and we pray that it helps you!
Now let’s pray:
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today, two souls bound by love and commitment, eager to honor You in every aspect of our union, especially in our finances.
Lord, grant us the grace to communicate openly and honestly. As we navigate the delicate waves of money matters, may our words be seasoned with love and understanding.
Father, guide our hearts in setting long-term goals that are aligned with Your will. Help us to seek first Your kingdom, trusting that all else will follow, as Your Word promises in Matthew 6:33.
Unify us, Father, not just in financial matters, but in spirit. May we bear each other’s burdens and uplift each other in times of need. Let us trust not in wealth or material things, but in Your endless love and providence.
Above all, may our marriage be a testament to Your goodness and a vessel through which Your love is manifested.
In the precious name of Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.
