Satisfied

Does your spirit know how to be satisfied in Him?

Journal Entry, Age 16, when I began having casual relationships: “I know this stuff doesn't make me happy. Why do I pretend it does and lie to myself like this. God can fill this hole in me - I know He can. I just don't know how to let go of everything else.’”

In the midst of my captivity, I had said in my heart over and over, nothing on earth can satisfy like sex and relationships. Not even God.

Fast forward to the present: I realized the question, “Can You really satisfy me?” had not yet been fully settled in my heart. I was no longer turning to sexual things for satisfaction, but I was turning to every ‘good thing’ except the Giver of good things Himself. I had become secure in His love but not yet fulfilled. I had been waiting to be fulfilled (through the love and intimacy from my future spouse) and in the meantime settling for a vague form of satisfaction (through movies and chocolate on the weekends).

Can I be fulfilled now? Can singles be fulfilled too - truly filled - complete, wanting for nothing? This must be true, because You are a loving and just God, and if some will remain single, You must be able to fulfill them (and all marrieds too). Please show me...

And He asked me to lay down all the ways I have sought satisfaction apart from Him - to show me Himself, again in the desert. I unmistakably heard His invitation for me to fast for a period of time, from all the ways I have sought rest, refreshment, joy, pleasure and satisfaction outside of Him.

I am so scared to lay everything down... Can You satisfy me? Or will I be left out here empty-handed?

Take My hand, my beloved. I will show you wonderful things.

Nothing else can truly satisfy. He’s taking you by the hand, and saying, “Come with Me, come in deeper, there’s so much I want to show you.”

Talk with Jesus

As you read today’s verses, bring these questions to Jesus and talk with Him about them.

• What have I gone to for satisfaction? Do those things satisfy me?
• Have I said in my heart, ”You can’t satisfy me more than [fill in the blank]”? Have I said that You aren’t sufficient for me in [this area]? Have I made any such claims in my heart that I need to repent from, that have stood in the way of me seeing how You satisfy to the utmost?
• Do I believe that You can satisfy me more than anything in this world?
• Do I trust You enough to let You show me, whatever it takes?

Prayer: Jesus, I learned about satisfaction in a worldly way. Show me what true satisfaction is. Whatever it takes, would you show me how only You satisfy me in all places, in all ways. You are the Giver of good things. Surely the gift cannot be greater than the Giver Himself. Show me more of who You are.
