Seek Me FirstSample
Definition
Yesterday we read several scriptures in the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition that include the words or phrase: Seek the Lord as your vital necessity. When a passage of Scripture jumps out at me, I like to break it down and look up keywords in the dictionary. Nerd, remember?
If you followed me to Dictionary.com, we would find the following:
Seek(verb):
- to go in search or quest of
- to try to find or discover by searching or questioning
- to try to obtain
- to try or attempt
- to go to
- to inquire.
Lord:
- a person who has authority, control, or power
- a person who is a leader or has great influence.
Vital:
- being the seat or source of life
- necessary to the existence, continuance, or well-being of something; indispensable; essential
- of critical importance.
Necessity:
- the fact of being necessary or indispensable;
- an imperative requirement or need for something
- an unavoidable need or compulsion to do something.
Considering all of this, I would say the advice of Moses, David, Isaiah, and Jeremiah on how to seek the Lord boils down to this: Go after God as if your life depends on it.
Okay, but how do I actually do that, God? I pondered and prayed one morning as I cleaned up the kitchen after sending my boys off to school. I reheated my two-hour-old cup of coffee in the microwave for the fifteenth time and got busy with washing dishes and wiping counters. In my everyday life of family and work and relationships, what does seeking You as my vital necessity actually look like? I prayed.
Right there in my kitchen, as I was putting the carafe of the coffee maker back in its place, I felt the Holy Spirit speak to my heart: "Seeking Me as your vital necessity doesn't have to be complicated, Bek... Seek Me first. Seek Me like you seek coffee. If you seek Me like you seek coffee, you're going to be just fine."
The only sound that followed was the dripping dishrag in my hand as I stood still to take in the significance of the moment. The practical application of this simple, but profound instruction began to unveil itself layer by layer. We will unpack that tomorrow.
Let's Pray:
God, thank You for Your Word and how You speak to us so personally and lovingly. Thank you for being a Good Father who wants to help us understand Your instructions. Please reveal to me in a personal way how You want me to seek You as my vital necessity in my daily life.
