Walking in God's Purpose

DAY 6 OF 6

Guarding Your Purpose

It goes without saying that the devil doesn’t want you to walk in God’s will. He’ll do whatever it takes to destroy your destiny. Therefore, it’s crucial to know how to guard your purpose.

David returned from defeating Goliath to the adulation of all Israel much to Saul’s disgruntlement (1 Samuel 18:6–9), and so began years of danger and conflict fuelled by Saul’s jealousy. Saul was bent on destroying David’s purpose. As a carrier of God’s purpose, you’ll need to run as David did from people who want to negate or destroy your destiny. Not everybody understands where God brought you from and where He’s taking you to.

You may even need to flee to a kind of wilderness the way David did (1 Samuel 23:14) because God wants to train and refine you by removing you from your comfort zone and exposing you to harsh challenges. This isn’t to destroy your purpose but to sharpen it. When He does, cling to the promises God offers in Isaiah 43:2 and follow these four steps to guard God’s purpose in your life.

  1. Study and stay true to God’s Word. Make up your mind to not believe the devil’s lies. What the world says about you doesn’t define who you are or where God is taking you. The surest way to protect your purpose is to believe with all your heart what your Heavenly Father says about you in His Word (and not what social media says about you).
  2. Learn the art of submission and obedience to mentorship. You need the encouraging words of those a little further ahead of you on life’s journey.
  3. Be available for service. If you’re too big to serve, then you’re too small to lead. All great people were once servants. Even David served a king of Israel at one point (1 Samuel 16:21), later becoming king himself. If your dream is to be a great musician, then look for a music department in your local church and start serving, even in the smallest of ways.
  4. Stay humble. 1 Peter 5:5–6 teaches us that God opposes the proud but pours out His grace on the humble. When we humbly trust Him, He lifts us up when the time is right.

May your light shine to the ends of the earth as you joyfully walk in God’s purpose!
