CHANGED! And Changing Still..

DAY 27 OF 31

The Cost Of Discipleship

Key Thought

It can be hard to imagine that discipleship would come at a cost. How could becoming like Jesus be considered a cost? What could it possibly cost me to become more like Jesus?

A better question would be, how much of me can I keep while I become more like Jesus? I want more of God without losing any of me. But there is no room for more of God when I am full of myself!

The cost of discipleship is the willingness to become less of myself as I take on more of who Jesus is. We call it dying to self because there are parts of my ego that just don't want to give in or let go or give up my rights, my status, my opinions or my comforts. How can I say yes to Jesus but no when He wants to deal with my attitudes or my proud and selfish ways?

John the Baptist was the prophet who proclaimed that Jesus was coming into the world. He was also the one who baptised Jesus. John also had many disciples that followed him. One day his disciples came and told him how Jesus was now baptising people and had more followers than John did. Jesus was becoming more popular.

John knew the cost of discipleship. He didn't even skip a beat. John declared ‘Jesus must become more important. I must become less important!’

Time To Think

How important am I in my own eyes?
Am I willing for Jesus to become the most important person in the whole world?

Prayer

Jesus, You are saviour of the world. Nobody comes close to You. You are the supreme ruler and King of all creation. There is nobody more important than You. Nobody else we should worship and follow. Please help me to become less everyday and for You to become more in my life. Amen.
