"Sticking to the Plan"
How do you know it’s the one? This was Eleazar’s question, and his master, Abraham, made him swear he’d bring home the right girl for Isaac. In an act we would find puzzling, Eleazar promises faithfulness to the task by placing his hand under Avraham’s (Abraham’s) thigh. The custom honors the circumcision, the physical sign of Avraham’s part in the covenant. It also can be said that on Eleazar’s obedience rests the future of Avraham’s descendants. This was no small vow! Eleazar is led to Avraham’s hometown and stands beside a spring. Out of a sea of possibilities, how was Eleazar to make the right choice?
Fetching water at the well was a task for young women, done outside the city towards the end of the day. When faced with a very important decision, it’s a good idea to quiet our minds and wait for events to unfold without our intervention. With Eleazar in the right place at the right time, God revealed His choice…not just because Isaac’s future depended on it, but for the sake of God’s bigger purpose. Points to Ponder: The practice of faith on a daily basis depends on walking closely with God, and being in constant listening mode. Know His voice, and you’ll just “know” what to do next.
