Year of the Bible: Part Nine of Twelve

DAY 25 OF 30

Logos: the Reason Why

Gospel accounts tell us about Jesus, where He came from, and what He did during the years of His ministry. John’s purpose was not just to recount the ministry of Jesus but to reveal the man, the heart, and the personality of Jesus, the Son of God.

David Pawson points out that John did not start his writing with Jesus’ birth or ministry. He went back to the very beginning. What was Jesus called before He was born as a human? He was the Logos, the word. When He was born, Jesus was the “word made flesh.”

Significantly, John wrote his account of Jesus from Ephesus. That location is significant because Heraclitus, a father of modern science, had also lived in Ephesus. Heraclitus was a keen observer and was always asking, “why?” When studying something, you are looking for why it behaves as it does. That reason is the Logos, the origin for why weather patterns exist, why cells form the way they do, etc. John pointed back to the beginning of time to define why things exist as they are. Jesus is the Logos, the reason why.

John wrote his memoir to prove Jesus was divine and the reason why all things are. His compelling case—with evidence from miraculous signs and Jesus’ “I am” statements—challenged people’s thinking and declared that Jesus was the Messiah. John wrote in the Greek present continuous tense—which doesn’t exist in English—so that we might believe and keep believing that Jesus is Christ.

Question: Who do you say Jesus is?

Prayer: Father, please show me the significance of who Jesus said He was. I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. I believe that He was fully God and fully human. I believe He came in human form and existed from the beginning. Help me to go on believing! He is the Logos, the reason for all things. Help my spirit to bear witness that He is for me, in me, and all around me. Give me revelation to see Him as the reason for all things and the foundation of all I experience with my senses. I declare that I believe in who Jesus is, not only in what He did. He is God! Amen!
