Our Bible message today is from the story of Solomon and his brother Adonijah. It’s about a tough family dynamic that turns political as two brothers plan to inherit their father’s kingdom. Seeing that his father, King David, is nearing the end of his life, Adonijah begins to assert himself as king. His intentions were to establish his claim on the throne once David passes. However, Solomon is the son who is meant to be king after David. Adding to this is the fact that Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, knows that if Adonijah becomes king, Solomon will be exiled or possibly even killed. In this moment of turmoil and upheaval in David’s family, God sends friends to Bathsheba to help her make key decisions and support her in taking care of her family.

When we are facing bad times, God can send us support through the people around us. They aren’t replacements for God, but rather extensions of His provision in our lives. This is one of the many reasons that being connected to a strong community is so essential to our journey of faith.
