Prayers and Reflections to Strengthen Your Relationship With GodSample
The Helper
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” —John 14:26 NKJV
During graduate school, I was often inundated with work: classwork, ministry responsibilities, business obligations, and family needs. It felt like I lived at the bottom of a never-ending to-do list. During this time, I received some advice that has stuck with me ever since. A professor said, “View everything you do as worship unto God.”
The problem was, I didn’t immediately know how to view the things that caused me stress as worship unto God. So I asked God for help. There’s no one who knows how to worship God better than God Himself, right? The Holy Spirit showed me how to view my time studying for school, writing papers, helping clients, serving in church, and even my personal care time as moments of worship.
Jesus was the greatest person who walked this earth, the One who managed to live for thirty-three years without committing a sin. In John 14, in a very intimate moment with His disciples, in so many words, He said, “I’m going to ask the Father to send you someone better than me, who will empower you and not only remind you of what I’ve taught you, but who will also help you do even greater things than I’ve done.”
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “helper” as “a relatively unskilled worker who assists a skilled worker usually by manual labor.” In the Kingdom of God, this is not an accurate portrayal of our Helper. The Holy Spirit provides us with help effortlessly. Jesus highly regarded this Helper as an advocate, a special gift to us from the Father. Without the Holy Spirit, we have no power and no authority. He’s truly our secret weapon.
The next time something in your house is lost or you need help completing a task, just say a simple prayer: Holy Spirit, help me. And be sure to remember to document the moments and miracles you’ll experience with your Helper.
REFLECTION
How can you intentionally invite the Holy Spirit into your everyday moments to help you? Remember that He is not just there for the “spiritual” experiences but for all experiences.
PRAYER
O Lord, my shepherd, thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit, who leads me into all truth. I declare that I will rely on the Holy Spirit to teach me all things and remind me of Your teachings. In Jesus’s name, amen.
