Lead With Intent

DAY 9 OF 9

9. Principle - Practice - Impact on Culture

Hope - Coaching - Meaning

We all get despondent sometimes. Life can be brutal. Jesus reminds us of this in John 16: 33: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Jesus was constantly coaching His disciples about the reality of this life and the next. Leaders must adopt coaching as part of their management style. With coaching, you challenge people on their subjective perceptions. Jesus constantly did this throughout the Gospels, challenging assumptions and asking great coaching questions.

We all perceive the world subjectively until someone cares enough to challenge us. Some of us play the victim and need to be challenged, and some of us victimize others and need to be challenged about that. Jesus is clear, it will be tough, but I came to give you peace because I win at the end. That hope kept the disciples going until they were martyred for the Kingdom of God. They knew like Paul: "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." What tremendous meaning and purpose!

If you as a leader see your people victimizing and bullying others, speak up and address this immediately with a coaching conversation. If you see someone or a group playing the victim, challenge them with a coaching conversation so that they take ownership and stop blaming others for their problems. People cannot find meaning by destroying others or feeling sorry for themselves. Leaders with intent coach their people to own their lives and decisions. Hope comes when people deal with their reality by understanding they have a choice.
