A Journey of Life and Leadership: A 5-Day Reading Plan by Jeremy NortonSample
Connecting with Creation
Unfortunately, something strange happens to most of us near adulthood. Somehow, the enjoyment of playing outside loses its luster. All of a sudden, going outside starts to depend on the weather, or temperature, or even the ratio of sunlight to clouds. It becomes something we have to do for physical health reasons instead of for enjoyment. Regardless of our abundant access to transportation and numerous natural wonders, our childhood thrills of playing outside have suddenly become a chore. Even though most of us greatly appreciate and are in awe of the majestic world that God has created, we see more of it through social media instead of real life.
According to Paul’s letter to the Romans, creation should point anyone and everyone in God’s direction. “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So, they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20). Regardless of where we are located, finding some untouched creation and spending time there can greatly impact our walk with Jesus. I believe something significant can be obtained from entering into creation on a more regular basis. If we isolate ourselves from the created world, we’re neglecting something valuable that God has given us.
Is refusing to play outside having a greater risk on more than just your physical health? Could you be experiencing spiritual implications by not connecting with the created world?
Pray: Lord, help me find time to stop, enjoy, and reflect on the beauty of Your creation. Convict me if I have neglected the natural gifts You have provided. Help me cherish created things, great and small. Help me become a person who enjoys playing outside. Show me how to help others see Your created beauty and design as well. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
