How to Handle Affliction and SufferingSample
Enduring in God’s strength
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
In Psalm 23, David compares himself to a helpless sheep. On his own, he would not be able to survive. But in the care of his Shepherd, he is perfectly safe! Even in very dark circumstances, metaphorically called “a valley as dark as the grave”, he needs not be afraid of any danger since God is comforting and protecting him.
Paul has experienced the same. He went through many hardships that he could not bear on his own. But he endured “through Him who strengthens me” — Jesus Christ. Even when he was imprisoned and deserted by his fellow believers, “the Lord stood by me and strengthened me”, Paul testifies (2 Timothy 4:17).
When Jesus was facing His imminent suffering and death, He was deeply troubled. Being the Son of God, He could hardly endure the Father’s wrath! In His agony, He prayed. Then God sent an angel from heaven to strengthen Him.
So, if Jesus Christ could not endure in His own strength, we need not even try. Give all your anxieties and troubles to God. He will strengthen you.
About this Plan
The apostle Paul tells his readers, “We must suffer many things on our way into God’s kingdom” (Acts 14:22). Reading the book of Acts or hearing testimonies from Christians all over the world, these words are proven true. Believers face opposition and persecution. Maybe you experience affliction yourself. In this reading plan, we want to encourage you and to teach you how to handle affliction.
