Why Do I Feel This Way?

DAY 3 OF 3

In Genesis 2, God declared human togetherness over creation because it was “not good” for man to be alone. From this revelation, God created the marriage relationship, but marriage is not the only relationship that forms togetherness. God also created family, friendship, tribe, and community.

Yes, God created our souls for togetherness with a purpose, but our broken world produces countless states of loneliness.

We’ve all experienced loneliness before, feeling disconnected or isolated from others and our purpose with them. This doesn’t mean that people aren’t in proximity, but it means that we feel like no one knows us or cares about us, which is what our spiritual enemy wants us to believe. Satan wants us all to run towards isolation because this paralyzes us and keeps us from our purpose.

In all this, we need to understand where loneliness comes from and how to fix it.

We first look to Genesis 2 to learn these principles:

  • God allows us to experience times of loneliness for a purpose.
    • God reminds us that we are made for human togetherness, and creation alone isn’t the solution.
  • God makes Himself the exclusive redeemer of our loneliness.
    • Adam could not redeem or resolve his loneliness, and neither can we.

All this points to loneliness as a signal that our relationship with God or others needs attention. There are times in life when loneliness is a cue that we need closer togetherness with God, and at other times it’s a cue that we need closer community with others.

Paul speaks into all this and pulls it all together through Christ and the Church in 2 Corinthians 1. Here is what he is trying to teach us:

  • God the Father comforts us in our loneliness through our relationship with Christ.
  • Christ redeems our loneliness primarily through our togetherness and purpose as His Church.

So, where do we go from here?

  • Call out and come out of isolation.
  • Seek new and deeper levels of togetherness in the Church.
  • Carry Christ’s comfort into the world.

Day 2

About this Plan

Why Do I Feel This Way?

Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, an end of a relationship, sickness, or a seemingly unfulfilled promise, pain and suffering affect us all. Is God close to the brokenhearted? If so, how should we respond in these times? This plan will walk through the journeys of different people in the Bible who walked through disappointment and see how their pain drew them closer to God.
