NEVER STOP PRAYING

In the New Living Translation of the Bible, 1 Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 17, reads: ‘Never stop praying.’ It’s what Paul tells us to do. His advice is almost a command. Playing around with the order of the words and adding punctuation also has an impact. What about, ‘Praying? Never stop!’ or, ‘Stop praying? Never!’

OK, so the message is clear. But how? And that’s where the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples is an invaluable tool to help us get to grips with praying. It gives a framework for time with God and is the most-prayed and best-known prayer in the world.

How does such a significant prayer start? Very intimately. We address Almighty God, the all-powerful Creator of the universe as ‘Father.' Not only that – Jesus told his disciples to say ‘Our Father.' What a privilege to come to God in that way – just as Jesus himself did – and to be reminded that we are his children.

We acknowledge God’s holiness and his reign as King forever. Our needs come next and then we ask for forgiveness, which only God can give. It’s all there, but do we use it?
