What does it say?

Elijah’s ministry as the Lord’s prophet was coming to an end. Elisha, his protégé, was preparing to take his place. Elijah was taken to Heaven, and Elisha began his ministry.

What does it mean?

The revelation that Elijah was leaving made Elisha determined to stay by his side. Elisha’s responses to being left behind show his relationship with his spiritual mentor and his understanding of what God was calling him to do. By requesting a double portion, Elisha asked to be treated as a first-born son, heir to Elijah’s ministry as the prophet of the Lord. He wanted to make sure he was fully equipped to do all God had called him to do.

How should I respond?

How passionate are you about the things of God? Do you strive to be prepared to serve? Being prepared means understanding what God has called you to do. If you haven’t already done so, take a spiritual gift test to determine exactly how the Holy Spirit has equipped you to operate within your local church. Also, examine your talents, abilities, and present circumstances. How do they factor into your service for the Lord?
