The Secret: How Do You See Love?

DAY 15 OF 42

One of a Kind

Written By: Pastor Dan Hickling

“‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.”—Mark 10:7-8 (NKJV)

There’s no substitute for Jesus setting things straight! An issue is brought into the arena of public opinion. One person thinks this, another person thinks that... confusion abounds and conviction is replaced by whatever compromise proves most popular.

Jesus cuts through all of that. With laser-like focus and clarity, He tells us what’s true regardless of whether it differs from society’s mold.

That’s what’s unfolding in Mark’s Gospel above. Various views were being promoted regarding the nature of marriage. According to popular opinion, it was something a man could easily get into and just as easily get out of if he wanted. But Jesus said otherwise. He took His confused audience back to the beginning, to the first marriage union, and He reminded them that the nature of this relationship was one of a kind.

God’s Word tells us that the relationship between a husband and wife is unlike any other human connection. The two become one; not just physically, but they are also seen by God as one entity. They are no longer viewed as two independent people who happen to co-exist. They have entered into a sacred bond of oneness that doesn’t occur in the context of any other human relationship.

As much as a parent and child love each other, they are never “one.” As much as a godly friendship may bring two people together, they are never “one” in God’s eyes. The marital bond is one of a kind in all the earth, and Jesus reminds us that we need to start seeing it as God does.

Marriage isn’t something to be taken lightly. We must approach it with God’s perspective as a sacred union that is not to be broken. It is intended to be a lifelong commitment where two become one to remain as one.

That isn’t the prevailing view of the world we live in, but that doesn’t change the truth of the matter as given to us by the Son of God Himself! May we allow His words to define our understanding of what is true, as well as our attitude towards this relationship that’s truly one of a kind.
