In early 2001, Michael W. Smith was moved to create a worship album. At first, he said no to the Spirit's prompting and then finally yielded. The album was released on September 11th, 2001. The music met the moment and ignited a worship music revolution that continues today.

"These songs were making their way into churches, and it was this real, beautiful grassroots thing," said Chris Tomlin, "no publishers, no labels, and all these other things. Just these churches passing their songs around." Greg Laurie says that the worship movement is, in a way, a return to the early days of Christian music and the roots of the Jesus movement. Away from an emphasis on platforms and performance and toward a genuine desire to lead people into the presence of God. 

Music styles will always differ among congregations and cultures and in different eras of the church. We need creativity and beauty, and artistic expression. But one thing that unites Christians is the desire to worship. Humans were made to worship. The prophet Isaiah reminds us, "The people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise" (Isaiah 43:21). 

Artists who write songs for the church are a gift, lending their creativity to help give us the words and music to ignite a passion for God. "Music could shift a whole atmosphere and help people get on their face before God," says Kari Jobe, "We're created for the eternal. We're created for the sacred."

You are created for the sacred. True worship is worshipping God in spirit and truth. The spirit of God moves within us and ignites our hearts, and inflames within us the truth about Jesus Christ. As you go about your day today, perhaps you might ask God to give you a heart of worship. And you might play the music of your favorite Christian artist to help guide you.
