DAY 3 OF 7

DAY 3: Discover Who You Are

Who were you made to be? That’s what we’re here to discover. Our research shows that most people believe the best way to understand who you are supposed to be is to look within yourself. Almost nine out of ten adults (86 percent) agree with this statement. Across age, gender, and faith beliefs, the majority feel that we can find wisdom and direction by looking within. But when we don’t truly know ourselves, how are we to use ourselves as a source of truth?

When your heart, which encompasses all of who you are, centers around an identity in Christ, it is easier to trust where it leads you. Our hearts can speak truth and wisdom to us if we have surrendered ourselves to the source of all truth and wisdom, Jesus Christ. Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to guard our hearts because the Holy Spirit guides us from within our hearts. Only when Christ and his Spirit dwell in us can we then look inside ourselves with confidence and listen to what our own hearts are telling us about who we are and what we are called to be. The Caller, your Creator, wants you to show up to life as your true self, not some imaginary idea of who you are supposed to be.

You’re not striving to become a “better you,” you’re just trying to understand who you truly are, who you’ve always been. This process requires action and your personal participation, but it’s not all up to you. (Doesn’t it feel good to be relieved of that pressure?) Each of us has been made with certain natural inclinations. Finding those characteristics — and then embracing them — is an essential part of becoming who we were made to be and bringing the gift of our true selves to the world.

Seeking Jesus and his Spirit leads to discovering our true selves, as He removes the lies and reveals the truth of who we are and how we are made. It begins with prayer (asking) and meditation (listening). In prayer, ask how you were put together and who you are called to be. Then listen to the Holy Spirit in you, prompting, guiding, and counseling to reveal who you are.
