Who I Say God IsSample

Who I Say God Is

DAY 2 OF 7

Manmade god: Aaron and the golden calf

God doesn't always work according to our schedules, and when He doesn't, we often get impatient. Surely it would be so much more convenient for us if God was in our image and likeness, rather than the other way around!

'Who I say God is' isn't necessarily who God is. Today's story is a classic example. God wasn't working according to Israel's schedule, so they got impatient and demanded their caretaker leader to make them a god. Manmade gods are pliable. The One True God moulds us, not the other way around.

Manmade gods don't mind if we eat, drink, and are merry, with no consideration of the consequences. God, on the other hand, is a jealous God, and He doesn't take kindly to other lovers. What we worship is what we love, what we think about most. Our faithful and Holy God demands our sincere spiritual love and that He be the priority of our hearts.

This story is also an amazing example of how God responds to us. When we offend Him, He rightly gets angry. But when Moses intercedes for His people, our merciful God relents from the destruction He could so rightfully visit upon His rebellious people.

'Almighty Lord, forgive us for so often wanting to make gods who comply with us, rather than us conforming to Your righteous requirements of us, in the name of Jesus, amen.'

Do you accept God as He reveals Himself in His Word, the Bible? Or do you prefer to imagine your own god?

About this Plan

Who I Say God Is

We often like to think and sing about 'Who God Says I Am,' but what if we were to change the focus from us to God? Is our understanding of 'Who I Say God Is' accurate, or do we have a distorted view of the Divine? Let's consider different conceptions of God in the Bible, as we seek to realign our visions to the Truth.
