Insecure

DAY 19 OF 28

When Insecurity Becomes Abuse

David found himself caught in an abusive relationship. He was in service to a King who was violently jealous of his success and wanted to kill him. David loved his family and even cared deeply for Saul, who hated him without reason. David wanted to stay in service to the King and remain with his family and friends, but it was clear to stay meant his life was in danger.

God is a God of reconciliation, but he does not will us to remain in situations where our emotional and physical health are in danger. There are times when an unkind person turns abusive, and we must set boundaries or even walk away from that abusive situation. David had already tried to please Saul and had shown himself loyal to him. However, David now recognized that he could not change Saul's mind and to stay would mean death and suffering for him. God doesn't force us to remain in highly abusive situations. Sometimes we need to walk away from a relationship because staying is dangerous for our emotional and physical health.

Daily Challenge: How about you? Have you ever found yourself in a situation that was dangerous to your emotional or physical health? If you find yourself in a toxic relationship, pray and ask God for wisdom how he would ask you to respond in this situation. If you feel overwhelmed on what to do, seek the help of a professional counselor.
