Leading Through Fatigue

DAY 2 OF 4

God Sees You

Being a youth leader can sometimes feel like a one-way street. You show up for your youth, run carpools, connect with parents and guardians, and pour your heart out in an effort to engage teenagers. And sometimes after doing all that, you receive little to no engagement (never mind a “thank-you”).

If you’ve ever felt like you aren’t reaching the people God’s called you to reach, then you’re in good company. Elijah experienced this same thing. He had just been a part of one of the greatest displays of God’s power, yet some of the very people Elijah was trying to love wanted him dead.

He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die, “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

Elijah felt defeated — but God saw him.

God sees you and your exhaustion. He sees you in your struggle, and He sees your hidden tears and frustrations — and He wants to give you rest. The Bible says that after Elijah cried out to God, three things happened:

  1. Elijah took a nap.
  2. God sent food and water to him.
  3. Elijah sat and listened for God’s whisper.

Sometimes, we can get so caught up in trying to minister to our youth that we forget about ministering to ourselves. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and you can’t keep a pace that isn’t sustainable. What Elijah did wasn’t as profound as it was practical

Tonight, put down your phone so you can be asleep by 10:00 PM (Pro-tip: sleep will fuel your body more than social media). Challenge yourself to stay hydrated by carrying a water bottle with you throughout the day. Swap a few of your pizza dinners for a healthier salad. Create space in your day to hear from God and be with Him before you set out to do anything for Him.

Bring your frustrations and emotions to God today — and then listen for His whisper.

About this Plan

Leading Through Fatigue

There’s no ministry quite like youth ministry! It’s fun and fast-paced, but it can also be overwhelming and exhausting. Pouring into the next generation can leave even the best leaders feeling depleted. How do you live and lead through seasons where it feels like you can’t catch your breath? Check out this four-day devotional, which is meant to breathe life and encouragement into the weary leader.
