Reset My Heart
The religious leaders are furious. Not only does Jesus hang out with sinners, but He clearly disobeys the law. According to Jewish law, you’re not allowed to work on the Sabbath (Friday night to Saturday). But Jesus consistently flips this rule on its head and asks, “Is it about the commandment, or is it about the heart?"
And Jesus isn’t content to stop there. Just look at this passage and see how many times Jesus flips an idea on its head.
Jesus ends with two word pictures: a tree and a house. How can you tell a thorn bush from a fig tree? Easy—look at its fruit. In the same way, you can tell a religious person from a Jesus follower from the “fruit” of their lives.
Someone who follows Jesus is like someone who builds a house on a rock. If you say you’re religious but don’t back it up with action, that’s like building a house on sand.
If you’ve been following Jesus in your words but not your action, then ask Jesus to reset your heart. Stop following rules for the sake of following rules and start following Jesus by doing what He did.
