DAY 3 OF 6

YOU ARE SALT AND LIGHT

You are the light of the world.

In a world that is hungry to know what are you against, we must be known for what we are for.

It’s the example we find of Jesus in John 8. In this story we see a woman caught in the act of adultery, and the teachers of the law had brought her before Jesus for judgement and condemnation. They were trying to get Jesus to bring judgement against sin, but Jesus was more interested in freeing her from the power of sin. He was making it clear that he is FOR this woman’s freedom from sin, not the judgement of her sin. He wanted to be known for what he was FOR not what he was against. Jesus is forgiving her, and more than that, he’s part of the answer to set her free.

Christians and the Church can sometimes have a reputation for what we stand in judgement against. But as we look at the life and example of Jesus and ask "what would Jesus do," we see that was not his example. As we look to be people who shine God’s light we must speak life to the challenges of our world. Flip the script on a reputation of negativity and judgement and instead say: as Jesus followers we are FOR life, we are FOR freedom, we are FOR hope.

How can I do this? How can I be a person who shines God’s light? Here’s some simple thoughts—check who I surround myself with—are they positive or negative? Then ask God to help you see people the way he sees them—full of potential and purpose. Finally, fill yourself with God’s Word which is LIFE and light.

Today as you read the key scriptures, ask yourself: who is in my world today who I can show life, hope, and optimism to? What situations in my world have I been treating with negativity and cynicism that I need to flip the script on? Where are the opportunities in my world to be salt and light today?  It’s what Jesus would do.

About this Plan

W W J D

WWJD—more than a bracelet or a bumper sticker, it’s a way of life. In this devotional we ask one fundamental question: "What Would Jesus Do?" As we uncover the life of Jesus, what lessons can he teach us about how he lived, what he spent his time doing, and who he shared his life with? We will be inspired to look at our own lives and ask: WWJD?
