Light and Darkness

DAY 6 OF 14

The light of life is found in Jesus

Light and life are strongly connected. Darkness causes death, but light gives life, both in the natural world and in the spiritual realm. Psalm 36:7-9 expresses this truth in a song of praise: “How precious is your steadfast love, O God! […] For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.”

The New Testament records how Jesus Christ became a human baby and grew up to become a preacher. He was really human, but at the same time remained God: “in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (Colossians 1:19). Therefore, Jesus could truly say that He is “the light of the world”. He is the physical manifestation of God’s glory and light and life- giving power.

Jesus says that we will have the light of life if we “follow Him”. Following Jesus means to recognize Him as our Teacher and to believe in Him as our Savior. It means holding to His teachings and applying them to our lives. That way, our connection to God is restored, and we can see light in His light. We receive eternal life, because we are connected with the Fountain of Life itself.

Are you a follower of Jesus?

About this Plan

Light and Darkness

Immediately in the first chapter of the Bible, we read how God created light. And further on in the Bible, light is often used as a metaphor for God’s domain as opposed to the domain of sin and death. Jesus even calls Himself “the Light of the world”. Light and darkness thus have an important place in the Bible. This reading plan presents a selection of verses about this topic.
