Strong and CourageousSample
Stronghold of God
We’ve looked at God as a source of strength and how time in His presence can refresh and strengthen us in the challenges and hurries of this life.
So let me ask you something: where do you run for protection? You know, on those days when the whole world seems to be against you or when your circumstances take a sudden turn for the worse. Where do you turn for protection from the storm?
Without doubt, there are times in this life when we all need protecting—times when we’re crushed by the weight of our troubles, when enemies assail us on all sides.
In the days of old, cities had walls and fortresses built around them, and with good reason. It was their protection against an enemy attack. It was their safety and security.
And it was back in those days that King David of Israel penned these words about God:
“Many people are suffering—crushed by the weight of their troubles. But the Lord is a refuge for them, a safe place they can run to. Lord, those who know your name come to you for protection. And when they come, you do not leave them without help” (Psalm 9:9–10).
David had many enemies. There were many times when his life was in peril, from his predecessor King Saul, from armies of other nations, even from his own son. And yet through it all he discovered that whatever walls he was able to build around Jerusalem, the real stronghold, the real fortress, the real protection was God Himself.
It’s true. Sometimes we are crushed by the weight of our troubles. Sometimes enemies do assail us on all sides. And in those desperate times, the Lord is your refuge. The Lord is the safe place you can run to. The Lord is your protection.
And mark this: He will never, ever leave you without help.
That’s a truth you’d do well to allow the Holy Spirit to write on your heart because who knows when you’ll need it?
Life Application Questions
- Read through King David’s psalm again. Does it help you to know that this mighty man of God, a king and warrior, still felt overwhelmed by life’s burdens? How can you follow his example of strong and courageous faith?
- What troubles are weighing you down right now? Health problems, financial struggle, family conflict?
- Take them to God, one by one. Name them. Share why you’re struggling with them. Give them to your Heavenly Father. Leave your burdens at His feet.
Pray with me: Lord, you are my strength and my fortress. Help me to know that you are my safe place in times of trouble. God, I need more of your wisdom, peace and strength in my life, today and every day. Help me to follow you more closely and live more fully in your strength, not my own. Amen.
