The Power to Bless

The Lord God has given Me [His Servant] the tongue of disciples [as One who is taught], that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple [as One who is taught]. (Isaiah 50:4 AMP)

Your words are more powerful than you know. This power flows from the spiritual reality that we are God’s image-bearers in the earth—royal priests who carry Jesus’ authority and grace—containers of His grace ready to spill out supernatural power to anyone in need.

This gives our words enormous weight in both the natural and spiritual worlds. Angels attend to our declarations. Things in the heavenlies move and change in response to our proclamations. And one of the most powerful uses of our words is the God-given power to bless.

The Greek word frequently translated “bless” in the New Testament is eulogeo. It means “to speak well of someone or something.” In fact, it’s the source for our common word “eulogy,” which means “a speech in which a deceased person is praised and honored.”

It is easy and tempting to turn our times of prayer into sessions in which we complain about others—often those closest to us. But there is far more power to effect positive change in words of blessing.

In writing to scattered believers everywhere, the apostle Peter said, “Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. ... No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing” (1 Peter 3:8–9 MSG).

It is indeed our privilege to come before God and speak words of blessing toward others, and to do the same as we go through our days. Blessing others is a gift from God. He gives us encouraging words of wisdom, and the supernatural ability to speak a word of refreshment to the weary. It is always by grace!

By the indwelling Spirit of God, you are abundantly equipped to speak blessing and create blessing everywhere you go.

Prayer of Declaration:

Father, thank You for making me a carrier of Your grace and a messenger of Your blessing. Thank You for showing me how powerful my words really are, and how they are a positive force for change all around me.

I declare that You have given me a well-taught tongue, and a supernatural ability to encourage the weary with refreshing words of grace.

I happily yield my mouth to Your Spirit today, Heavenly Father, to speak blessing and words of refreshment to the weary and discouraged.
