Breakthrough by Red Rocks WorshipSample
Your power, your presence breaks strongholds, King of Heaven. When you speak, mountains move. I believe there will be breakthrough.
Our God has always been in the business of breakthrough. But what exactly does that imply? What do we mean when we say “breakthrough?” Breakthrough has historically been used as a militaristic term: the description of advancing beyond an enemy’s front line of defense. It also denotes the achievement of surpassing a significant obstacle or restriction or making a discovery that leads to a new understanding. These explanations have obvious parallels to our journeys with Christ; the pilgrimage of faith is marked by developments, momentous milestones of growth, and discoveries that further our understanding of what it means to be a Christ-follower. There is never a landing point—God is not a static entity to be harnessed, understood, or somehow realized; our God is a dynamic force of relational love that moves, breathes, and meets people wherever they are.
When we sing of breakthrough, we are referring to God’s mysterious and powerful way of taking us from one place to another: from a place of brokenness to wholeness, from confusion to trust, from bondage to freedom. Sometimes our need for breakthrough seems desperate and dire; if we don’t see the provision and presence of God show up soon, we will feel crushed under the weight of our circumstance. Sometimes breakthrough comes as a revelation; the Spirit of God illuminates in such a way that what was foggy now becomes clear, and we are able to move forward in confidence. Sometimes a breakthrough is long-awaited; our need for God’s answer, his movement, or his deliverance feels like it's late in coming—a desired reality that is being delayed another day. Whatever our situation may be, we know breakthrough is something we cannot procure on our own—its timing is determined by the sovereign Spirit of God.
We believe that our God works miracles. He can move the mountains with one word. Strongholds are broken in his presence. Paul wrote to the Ephesians that our struggles are not against flesh and blood, but that these are indicative of battles being waged in the spiritual realm. When we confidently sing out our belief that breakthrough is coming, we affirm that the dominion of darkness is no match for God’s authoritative light. Just as God promised Israel that he would make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the wasteland (Isaiah 43:19), God has promised that he will supply every need we have according to His riches and glory (Philippians 4:19). No matter our place in the journey, we know that the Holy Spirit desires to take us from glory to glory as we are being transformed more and more into the likeness of Christ. This is what it means to sing of our breakthrough—it’s always on the way for those who belong to Jesus.
