Daily Bible Reading - October 2020: God’s Life-Giving Word of Justice and PeaceSample
October 9
Introduction
Today’s reading describes Isaiah’s inaugural call to be a prophet. He has a vision of the divine court where he sees God majestically enthroned. Flaming creatures, each with six wings, appear and proclaim the holiness of the LORD. Isaiah immediately becomes aware of his own sinfulness. Then one of the creatures uses a pair of tongs to lift a burning coal from the altar and touches Isaiah’s lips with it, telling him that his sins are forgiven. Then Isaiah is commissioned to be the Lord’s messenger.
Scripture Reading
Isaiah 6:1-13
Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 6:3b
“Holy, holy, holy! The LORD Almighty is holy! His glory fills the world.”
Reflect
Today’s reading contains words of judgment because the people were putting their trust in idols and relying on foreign nations instead of the LORD. As the LORD’s prophet, what message was Isaiah told to deliver? What would make a prophet’s life difficult?
Pray
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty, you alone are holy and your glory fills the world. May every word that passes my lips today reflect your love. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.
