Daily Bible Reading - October 2020: God’s Life-Giving Word of Justice and PeaceSample
October 28
Introduction
The book of Nahum is a poem celebrating the fall of Nineveh, the capital city of Israel’s ancient and oppressive enemy, Assyria. The fall of Nineveh, near the end of the seventh century B.C., is seen as the judgment of God upon a cruel and arrogant nation. The LORD’s people are now able to live in peace and celebrate their festivals. Today’s reading describes God’s power in avenging those who are oppressed and taking care of those who turn to him.
Scripture Reading
Nahum 1:1-15
Today’s Key Verse: Nahum 1:7
The LORD is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him.
Reflect
Reread verses 2-10. How is the LORD God described? What does the LORD promise (verses 12-14)? What is the good news (verse 15)? Based on today’s reading, what verses speak of God’s judgment? What verses speak of God’s kindness and mercy?
Pray
All-Powerful God, you are good and merciful to those who turn to you. Your love for me fills my heart with joy. Daily will I praise you. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those in need of protective care
